Update 3/24: We are all out of bikes for now, but you can email us to get on the waiting list – allyson@bikenewportri.org
Biking is a safe, fun, and healthy activity during the coronavirus outbreak. It is also a vital mode of transportation for many. Bike Newport strives to make bicycles available to everyone in the community, no matter their situation.
Under normal circumstances, there are two ways to get a bicycle from our Bike Garage. You can volunteer your time and then choose a bike to fix up (with help!) and keep, or you can make a suggested donation for bike that is already road-ready.
But these are not normal circumstances. Our programs, including the Bike Garage, are suspended for the time being due to the coronavirus restrictions. However, we want to help people get on bikes – and get bikes to those who need them. We have a limited number of bicycles available right now. If you are in need of a bike, we will work together to match you up. If we have a bike available in your size, we will schedule a time for you to visit our Garage (or, in the case you are unable to get to us, coordinate a way to bring a bike to you).
We are not charging for these bikes. If you can afford to make a donation of any size, thank you! But it is definitely not required. If you are not in a position to donate now, but would like to later, keep in touch! Contributions always help us to make more bicycles available to more people. Right now, our focus is on getting bikes to those who need them. Please let folks know that we are collecting fixable bikes and restoring them and distributing them.
We must also stress that Bike Newport is closed to the public at this time. All appointments to pick up a bike will be one-at-a-time and as contactless as possible. Likewise, if you are dropping off a bike for donation, it’s a good idea to call ahead and to leave it in a spot like our racks by 62 Broadway where we can clean it and bring it in. We’re doing what we can to meet all of the recommendations by the Department of Health and are following to the letter all contact and hygiene requirements while we get these bikes out to the community.
If you or someone you know are in need of a bicycle during this time, please contact us either by emailing allyson@bikenewportri.org or calling us at 401-619-4900 and leaving a voice message with your information.
Thank you! Ride safe and ride happy.
