Let’s Ride Prudence Island!
Ready for a cycling adventure a little off the beaten path? Join Bike Newport board members and friends for a day of exploring Prudence Island by bike on Saturday, September 12!
We’ll take the ferry from Bristol to Prudence Island, then set out to explore the island’s quiet roads, beautiful shoreline, and scenic landscapes. The route will include both paved and unpaved roads, including packed and loose gravel, with some hills along the way.
We’ll ride at a leisurely pace of about 10 mph, with a lead rider for those who want to stay with the group. Prefer to explore at your own pace? You’re welcome to do that, too!
Along the way, we’ll stop to explore and take a break for lunch or a snack at a waterfront park on the south end of the island before heading back to the ferry for the ride home.

The Details
- Saturday, September 12
- Meet: 9:15 AM at the Prudence Island Ferry Dock
- 147 Thames Street, Bristol, RI
- The round-trip ferry fare is $13.60.
We’ll catch the 9:34 AM ferry to Prudence Island and plan to return to Bristol on the 4:15 PM ferry.
Please arrive early enough to park and bike to the ferry dock. Parking is available near the end of the East Bay Bike Path, close to Sip & Dip.
Is this ride for you?
Participants should be comfortable riding approximately 20 miles on a mix of paved and gravel roads. There are some hills. There are also unpaved sections with loose gravel, so road bikes with narrow tires are not recommended.
Please bring:
- Your bike, helmet, and lock (if you plan to leave your bike for additional exploring)
- Food and plenty of water for the day
- Mosquito repellent
- Anything else you may need for a full day of riding
There is a very small General Store at the ferry terminal, but there are no other places to purchase food on the island, so come prepared with your lunch and snacks.
A few important things to know:
- Participation is limited to 25 riders. All participants will be required to sign a liability waiver and provide their own transportation, food, and safety equipment.
- There is no cost to participate beyond the ferry fare, although donations to Bike Newport are always welcome.
- And just in case your island adventure takes an unexpected turn, the last ferry from Prudence Island is at 6 PM!
