Wherever “there” is, let’s get there by bike!
When we do, we reduce traffic congestion, save money, and are likely to arrive smiling!
Let’s get out of our cars, lighten our loads, and be part of the movement; part of the solution; part of the fun. Let’s get there by bike!
With carbon emissions peaking, sea levels rising, and single occupancy vehicles clogging our roadways – who wouldn’t opt for a short-distance zero-carbon money-saving endorphin-triggering pedal adventure to get where we’re going? Are you in?
On Aquidneck Island, 80% of car trips are under 4 miles, 50% are under 2 miles, and 24% are under 1 mile. We can bike and walk these distances, be healthier, and reduce traffic stress and congestion in the process.

There are efforts underway to help you get to your destinations in Newport, the City by the Sea, and all over Aquidneck Island by bicycle. Here’s what’s on tap…

Park & Bike Locations:
Make your plan to drive to town, park your car, and switch to your bicycle. Official Park & Bike locations include the surface lot off of the Pell Bridge and the YMCA in Middletown. More information HERE.
When you bring your bike to Aquidneck Island, you can leave your car wherever is convenient for you, and avoid traffic delays and expensive parking. Be sure to check the signs for parking restrictions.
Bike Support to Events and Destinations
In 2025, many events, festivals, and destinations will invite and support your ride – with routing to their locations and bike parking when you get there.
You’ll find popular bike routes and helpful information HERE.
Return to this page for support and information to bike to newportFILM, Newport Mansions, historic Rough Point mansion, Easton’s Beach, Sachuest Beach, Third Beach, Fort Adams, Sail Newport, Tennis Hall of Fame, vineyards, parks, theaters, restaurants, breweries, and more!

Bike Racks at Local Businesses – CONTEST UNDERWAY
Local businesses can enter a contest to win bike racks for high priority bike parking in our business districts.
Help put them where they’re needed most! Tell your favorite destinations that you want more racks and point them HERE for the easy application. Let’s have 18 new racks ready for use by Memorial Day!
Deadline to apply is April 30th.
Bike Rentals
If you don’t have your own bicycle, you can rent bikes from:
Bike Newport – where all fees directly support bicycle safety education islandwide.
Ten Speed Spokes – located right on the new Greenway!
Island Adventures – choose from an array of micromobility modes.

Protected BIKE LANES
The first segment of the (unofficially named) Aquidneck Island Greenway is complete. You can park at the new Park & Ride / Park & Bike lot and ride a protected bike lane north alongside Connell Highway into Middletown, or south along the rail corridor into downtown Newport. In 2024, we had a temporary bike lane in place for the Newport Folk Festival and we plan to have more temporary bike lanes in place during the 2025 summer season. Check back here for updates.
GET THERE BY BIKE!
This is what it looks like when up to 1800 people bike to the Newport Folk Festival each day. That’s at least 600 fewer cars! Imagine the reduction is traffic congestion, carbon emissions, and stress.
Let’s all be part of the solution.
