The third session of our Summer Bike Camp 2020 is a week dedicated to girls, in honor and memory of a very special Bike Newport friend who dedicated her life to women and girls – Gretchen Bloom – who passed away in February.
Gretchen was feisty and passionate, with an infectious energy. She was a role model of passion and persistence. Gretchen’s work with the United Nations, the US Government, and numerous nonprofits spanned over 101 countries. Her work in international development and humanitarian assistance focused on gender equity, social inclusion, and women’s empowerment. Her commitment was unwavering, and her work for equality and justice was delivered with love, peace, and joy.
Gretchen was a great supporter of Bike Newport. She was an avid bicyclist and advocate and a close, kind and generous friend. Gretchen and her husband Peter volunteered at every Bike Newport event when they were in town. Nearest to their hearts was our partnership with the annual Bike to the Beach New England ride to raise money for children with Autism, including our own very special programs for children with developmental challenges to learn and practice bicycle skills. The Blooms were active in many more community organizations, in their home towns of Newport, Washington DC, and Rome, Italy. So many of us are turning to one another and discovering “So you knew Gretchen, too!”
Gretchen’s Blooms Girls Bike Camp is our contribution to Gretchen’s legacy. May her energy continue to inspire.

Gretchen’s Blooms 2020 – on the paths of Miantonomi Park
On the last day of camp, the girls of Gretchen’s Blooms Bike Camp had a visit from Gretchen’s husband, Peter. They presented him with a beautiful memento, a decorated wheels with messages about their experience.
