Free E-Bike Classes

What Is an E-Bike?

There are 3 kinds of e-bikes
Class 1 – pedal-assist and max speed of 20mph
Class 2 – has throttle and max 20mph
Class 3 – pedal-assist and max speed of 28mph

An e-bike that is altered to make it go faster is NOT an e-bike and requires a license to operate it.

E-Bike Laws

  1. An E-Bike is classified as a bicycle with operable pedals, a seat for a rider, an electric motor of 750 watts or less, and a max speed of 20mph by use of the throttle.
  2. You must be over the age of 16 to operate an e-bike.
  3. E-Bikes may not be operated on the sidewalk.
  4. People riding e-bikes must follow the rules of the road.
    · Follow traffic, do not go the wrong way on a one way
    · Obey all traffic signals. Stop at stop signs and red lights.
  5. Anyone under the age of 21 must wear a helmet.

Replacement Bicycles for Students Under Age 16

What about students under age 16 who are using e-bikes to get to school?

Students under age 16 must stop riding e-bikes immediately until they turn 16. In order for this change not to interfere with their ability to get to school, Bike Newport will provide these students with a free replacement standard bicycle, lights, and a helmet. They should visit Bike Newport during Community Bike Garage hours.

You Have The Power: FREE E-Bike Safety Classes

E-bikes are a great way to commute, explore, and get out on the road. Our free classes give new and returning riders the skills to ride safely and confidently.

The two-part program covers knowledge of your bike, safety basics, safe riding and other essential skills — finishing with a group ride to practice what you’ve learned.

Part 1 — Learn how to ride legally and safely, and how to care for your e-bike.

Part 2 — Practice techniques and skills on the road, including a group ride.

  • Bring your own e-bike for Part 2 (the on-bike segment)
  • You must be able to comfortably handle and ride your bike
  • Must be age 16 or older
  • Riders ages 16–18 must be accompanied by an adult
