Elliot’s Ride 2024 Was Awesome Car-Free Fun!

June 12, 2024

Wow! More than 600 people participated in Elliot’s Ride for Everyone on June 8th, 2024. They all came to roll and stroll 3.5 miles of Newport’s stunning coastal road – without cars!

Here’s a delightful video recap – enjoy! Maybe you’ll find yourself and your friends among these delightful photos 🙂

Great things happen when the community comes together for a common cause. And there are many community members we want to thank:

  • Newport Craft Brewery, our awesome sponsor, for always being there to support our work for more, better, and safer cycling!
  • Mayor Xay Khamsyvoravong for welcoming everyone at the start of the event with your enlightening and supportive comments about the value of biking and walking investments to our health, our environment, and our economy.
  • Renee Kaminitz for always working toward better and safer roads for all, in honor and memory of her husband, Elliot Kaminitz, for whom this event is named.
  • School Superintendent Colleen Jermain and her staff, for making the Rogers High School location available and beautiful year after year.
  • The Newport Police Department, for their partnership, positivity, and police on bikes! Do weekend assignments get any better than this?
  • Our partners at Ride Island – Grow Smart RI, Toole Design, and van Beuren Charitable Foundation – for helping everyone learn about the effort to create connected bike access all over Aquidneck Island (Check out rideisland.org if you haven’t already.)
  • Newport City Councilors, the RI Department of Environmental Management, Empire Coffee, Shaw’s Supermarket, and Team One Sportswear.

Thanks to the Rhode Show, Newport Daily News, WhatsUpNewp, Hey Rhody, Newport This Week, and many other media outlets who helped get the word out so lots of folks could enjoy the morning on the Open Road.

Bravo! to all the egrets, herons, flora, and fauna who greeted, preened, and inspired so many smiles. Thank you for making Newport your home!

Yahoo! for all the kids, tweens, and teens, for bringing laughter, pedaling with enthusiasm, conquering hills, and spreading joy to everyone on the road. Your infectious energy lit up everyone who shared the road with you.

Sincere gratitude to all the residents and local workers who made plans around the event and made way for an amazing safe car-free experience in this beautiful coastal neighborhood.

Thanks to all the volunteers who marshaled, informed, and supported participants all along the route. You are all rock stars in our book!

And finally, HOORAY to all who participated! Thanks for coming out and having fun- and for experiencing and demonstrating the joy and promise of bicycling separated from cars. What a magical experience it can be!

Our many public events – including Elliot’s Ride for Everyone, Full Moon Rides, the Daffodil Rides, the 10-Spot Ride and more – are Bike Newport’s way of bringing community fun to the active transportation movement. We invite all to join us!

Thanks for being part of the movement to make progress – so people everywhere can safely choose to bike and walk to get where we’re going.

We wish everyone a delightful summer season filled with bike rides to all of your destinations – ditch the car and ride!
