Newport’s Bicycle Ordinances Are Under Review

March 10, 2026

Bicycle advocacy organization promoting diversity and inclusion in Newport's cycling community.
Recommendations aim to improve road safety in Newport.

The Newport Police Department, Bike Newport, and the Newport Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission collaborated to complete a comprehensive review of all local ordinances that address bicycles and bicycle operation in the City of Newport. The package of recommendations will be received by the Newport City Council on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.

Here is a copy of the document shared with the Council.

The recommendations address 20 ordinances and include:

  • Adding new ordinances
  • Updating  existing ordinances, and
  • Removing outdated ordinances

We’ll keep you apprised of upcoming discussions, workshops, and opportunities for feedback related to this important and timely ordinance review.

As always, please contact us with your thoughts and questions. Please email our Advocacy Associate, Chris Burich: chrisburich@bikenewportri.org.

Thanks to Newport Police Chief Ryan Duffy, the Newport Police Department, and the Newport BPAC for their deep commitment to this project; to the Newport City Council for prioritizing this review; and to you for staying informed and engaged!
