Bike Racks & Parking
Safe, secure bike parking shows your patrons and the community that you are a bike-friendly business. Bike Newport has helped expand Newport’s bike parking inventory and we need your help to make it even better.
Work with Bike Newport to set up bike parking for your event, just to try it out, or to help provide parking for a needed area in the city.
Borrow a Rack
Do you need a rack for an event, just want to see what it’s like to have an easy spot or bikes?
Bike Newport has a stable of bike racks that can hold up to 14 bikes!
Borrow our rack for free for two days, or rent it for an entire week for just $100. Email info@bikenewportri.org for more information and how to reserve a bike rack.
Rack requirements:
• the rack is 4’ x 10’ and requires at least 2’ around for maneuvering and parking bikes. If your rack is on a city sidewalk, a 6’ path must be kept clear for pedestrians. Racks weigh 60lbs.
• Rack replacement cost is $250.
• You’ll need to transport the rack to and from your location.
Buy a Rack
Show your customers that you are a bike-friendly business! Bike Newport can help you find the perfect bike parking for your location. We’ll assist in analyzing your traffic and local conditions, help you find a rack that will serve you best and install the rack.
For this service we ask a $250 contribution over the cost of the rack. Racks vary in price. Email info@bikenewportri.org for more information.
To get you started:
1) BRAVO and THANK YOU! There are few places on Aquidneck Island that have adequate bike parking and depending on trees, lightposts and signposts is not a solution.
2) HERE is an excellent guide to the basic recommendations and requirements that will lead to providing safe and secure bike parking – from the Association of Bicycle and Pedestrian Professionals.
3) Keep in mind that a bicycle rack should ALWAYS provide two points of contact with the bicycle in order to provide upright stability, and should always leave more than adequate passage for pedestrians to navigate any surrounding sidewalk area. See “Racks to Avoid” on page 8 and “Placement” on page 10 of this Guide.

Bike Newport and the city keep track of locations around the city that need racks. You can help out by sponsoring the purchase and installation of a city racks, and we’ll brand the racks for you or your business.
