Requests for Proposals to Expand Walking and Biking Infrastructure

April 1, 2026

Diverse cyclists enjoying a bridge ride, emphasizing inclusion and advocacy for all riders in our cycling community.
Accepting Applications

As we work to make biking and walking safer and more inviting on Aquidneck Island, we’re excited to share progress on two important projects. These projects have the potential to improve access, expand connectivity, and create more ways for people to get where they need to go without a car!

We are accepting applications for qualified engineering firms to help move these two exciting projects forward. The projects focus on expanding walking and biking infrastructure on and to Aquidneck Island.

Aquidneck Island Rail Corridor Shared-Use Path

Proposals due April 10, 2026

Aquidneck Island Land Trust’s Aquidneck Resilience initiative, in partnership with Bike Newport, is seeking a firm to design a shared-use path within the rail corridor alongside Burma Road. The project will also study a critical connection around the Navy Base, linking this corridor to the existing path on Coddington Highway. This work will help advance a long-envisioned goal: a continuous, off-road route that safely connects people across the island.

Multimodal Access Feasibility Study: Pell & Verrazzano Bridges

Proposals due May 15, 2026

Bike Newport is seeking a firm to lead a feasibility study exploring how the Pell and Verrazzano Bridges could better accommodate people walking and biking. The study will assess technical, safety, and financial considerations, while also looking at broader community benefits, such as improved connectivity, improved safety, and enhanced tourism and economic activity. This is an early and important step in understanding what’s possible for creating safer, more inclusive access across these critical links.
