Smiles Abound at the Annual Holiday Bike Giveaway

December 11, 2022

December 10, 2022

Every year, the Newport holiday season includes a delightful day of bike happiness for kids – the Annual Holiday Bike Giveaway! – when Bike Newport distributes dozens of bikes to the city’s children.

Our staff and volunteer elves are busy preparing from September through December – restoring lots of preloved bikes generously donated by community members. When the day arrived this year, on December 10th, 120 bikes were neatly lined up – all polished and donning festive red bows. Three hours later, 90 bikes had been matched with happy new owners!

At Bike Newport’s Big Blue Bike Barn on the north side of Miantonomi Park, lots of folks were on hand to help kids and their parents find their perfect bike, get fitted with helmets, and review bike safety basics. Hot cocoa and coffee flowed thanks to Empire Tea and Coffee.

Laughter carried from the bike giveaway area up to the Pump Track where kids and adults alike cruised the hills and berms. A helmeted 2-year-old on a push bike rode side-by-side with his mountain biking mom. Siblings, neighbors and new friends pedaled, pumped and circled round for more. Bike happiness abounded.

Do you know a child who needs a bike? Or have bikes to donate? Please email clare@bikenewportri.org.

The Holiday Bike Giveaway is made possible thanks to support from BankNewport, the Bazarsky Family Foundation, Greenbridge Foundation, the Bloom Family, Starkweather & Shepley, and many generous community members. Thanks to all!
