You Voted to Name the New Shared Use Path!

November 25, 2024

Illustrated cat reading a newspaper

Have you ridden the beautiful new shared use path that runs through Newport and into Middletown? The trail currently journeys along the railway corridor and the historic Farewell Street cemeteries, loops around the Admiral Kalbfus roundabout, and safely follows Connell/Coddington Highway – and it will continue growing and connecting destinations all over Aquidneck Island!

Well this path curently has no name!

On the hunt for the perfect name for the growing network – we turned to the community for inspiration. A host of creative bike enthusiasts dreamed up 29 names, culled it down to five finalists, and then put the vote out to you – to choose a favorite for us to propose to the RI Department of Transportation.

You cast your votes – and chose “THE AQUIDNECK ISLAND GREENWAY“.

Well that does have a nice ring to it!

We think it’s a great choice for what will be a growing network of connected paths to bike and walk our beautiful island. Thanks to all who participated!

We passed the name on to RIDOT, who welcomed the suggestion and in turn passed it on to the USDOT for federal approval. We’ll let you know as soon as the name is official!

Here are the results
