The New Life of an Old Bike

February 27, 2026

A diverse group of three cyclists, two women and one man, standing with their bikes on a city sidewalk, smiling and giving thumbs up, promoting inclusive cycling and community engagement.

Ever wondered what happens after you drop off a bike at Bike Newport?

Spoiler alert: It begins a new chapter.

Every donated bike gets a second (or third… or fourth!) chance to do what bikes do best: connect people, foster freedom, and spark some joy. Curious to know how bikes make it from your garage to our Bike Garage and out to the community? Take a look…

Step 1: TLC in the CBG

The magic begins when a donated bike first rolls into our Community Bike Garage. Our staff and volunteer mechanics give it a once over and check it into our inventory. When its turn comes, it gets a full check-up and rehab – brakes, gears, cables, tires, tuning, lubing, and truing, until it’s safe and ready to ride.

This process is powered by:

  • Bike Newport’s skilled staff
  • Dedicated volunteers who generously donate their skills, time and energy
  • Student interns who gain hands-on mechanical skills and real-world experience
  • Community Bike Garage participants who learn bike repair and earn a bike of their own in the process
Step 2: Ready to Roll

Once a bike is road-ready, it’s time to find its next home and human. Here are some ways restored bikes find their match:

Holiday Bike Giveaway

Each holiday season, we match about 120 bikes to kids and families. The day is an irresistibly delightful day of joy and the gift of independence and outdoor fun! Learn more about the Holiday Bike Giveaway.

Earn-a-Bike Program

Volunteers at the Community Bike Garage can earn a bike by contributing their time. It’s a win-win: learn new skills, support the community, and ride away with a bike you helped bring back to life. Explore the Community Bike Garage.

Supporting International Students

Hundreds of students from around the world arrive in Newport every summer through the J-1 Visa Exchange Program. For many, Bike Newport is their first stop – to pick up their summer transportation! They leave a deposit and get it back when they return the bike at the end of the summer – giving them an affordable reliable way to get to work, explore the island, and feel at home.

Education Programs

Happy children riding bikes promoting diversity and inclusion in cycling.

Our bikes take students from learning about bike safety to making biking part of their everyday lives. Ciclistas, empowers young riders to build confidence and community. After learning cycling skills and bicycle maintenance together, they leave with their own bikes to keep getting where they’re going. Bike safety education for 3rd and 5th graders across Aquidneck Island helps kids to learn safe skills and safe habits – and earns them their own bike from our fleet of lovingly restored bikes.

Bikes for Young Riders

All children 10 and younger get bikes for free at Bike Newport! That’s a sure way to ensure all kids can experience the fun of riding and start building biking into their lives from an early age.

Affordable Bike Sales

Our “adopt-a-bike” program is for adults who aren’t able to volunteer or work on their own bikes. We make lots of our restored bikes road-ready and available for immediate adoption in exchange for an affordable recommended donation – which, of course, supports the Community Bike Garage.

Your Bike Donation = Education, Access, and Community Connection

Turn that old bike in your garage into:

  • A fun new way to explore
  • A student’s safe ride to school
  • A seasonal worker’s way to get around town
  • An intern’s new set of skills
  • A volunteer’s new set of wheels

Thanks to People’s Credit Union for Sponsoring the Community Bike Garage!
