May is National Bike Month

The League of American Bicyclists established National Bike Month in 1956, and 70 years later it’s going strong from coast to coast. Bike Month is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling – and to give biking a try!

BIKE MONTH LAUNCH RIDE ON MAY 1!

On Friday, May 1st, we’ll ring in BIKE MONTH with a morning group ride into town from the “PARK & BIKE” lot directly off of the Pell Bridge. Pack your bike, park your car, and then hop in the saddle RIGHT ON THE NEW NEWPORT BIKE PATH.

Together with your friends from RIPTA Commuter Resources and teh DRIVE LESS RI – we’ll greet you from 8:00 to 8:30am with light refreshments and fun bike swag before setting off on the bike path into town – where we’ll see you off on your way to work, or school or your final destination.

Gather your colleagues and bike to work!

4:30 PM – Bike Friendly Announcements & Awards

Log your miles and collect prizes with Drive Less RI
You’ll earn lots of exciting perks like free admissions, discounts, swag, and more by using RIPTA’s Drive Less RI app. The app tracks your commutes and other trips by bike, transit, carpool, walking, scooter, and any combination, and you collect points along the way.

You can also use the app to easily find carpools and bike buddies for events.

Learn more about the program and download the app at the App Store or Google Play. Many of us use it at Bike Newport – it’s easy and fun!

Community Bike Garage
Bike Newport HQ, 62 Broadway, Newport
Find out why fixing a flat is so darn easy and LIBERATING. Join us at the Community Bike Garage and learn how to repair and maintain your bike. The Bike Garage is skilled guidance, helping hands, and welcoming camaraderie around bikes.

Bicycle Scavenger Hunt
Take your bike out in the neighborhood and beyond to see what you can find. Take photos, put them all in a post on Facebook or Instagram, and tag @bikenewportri. You’ll be contributing to bike community fun! Good luck and happy riding!

Night cycling under the full moon at Sunset and Moonrise, promoting diversity and inclusion in cycling. Join Bike Newport for monthly moon rides along Ocean Loop, celebrating community and outdoor adv.

Bike Newport’s fun monthly group ride – Enjoy coastal and historic Newport by the light of May’s Flower Moon! We’re in luck this month to have a SECOND full moon ride on May 31! Learn more and register here.

Saturday, May 2

CYCLE FRIENDS
First Saturday of every month
9:00 – 11:00 AM, Bike Newport HQ, 62 Broadway, Newport

Cycle Friends focuses on good health and well-being, safety, and friendship.

We invite riders of all interests and skills to learn how to take care of their bike, brush up on their bike safety skills, and get comfortable on their bikes. Many Cycle Friends sessions include a group ride!

Wednesday, May 6

BIKE TO SCHOOL DAY – Bike Bus Ride to Pell Elementary!

All Pell Elementary School students, teachers, parents, and guardians are welcome!

Help us spread the word by inviting Pell students, parents/guardians, families, friends, and community partners to join in the ride to school!

7:45am gather at the Big Blue Bike Barn
8:00am set off to ride to Pell Elementary
8:15am arrive in time to lock up bikes and get some goodies!
8:30am school day begins!

The ride will be led by Bike Newport’s cycling instructors. Parents/guardians please accompany your student to the Bike Barn in time to sign a required permission slip – thanks!

BIKES, HELMETS, and LOCKS: Bikes will be available to borrow on a first come, first served basis. All riders must wear a helmet and bring your own lock if you have one. We will also have locks available. A waiver must be signed by an adult for each student.

Children up to age 10 can receive a free bicycle, helmet, and lock from Bike Newport HQ, 62 Broadway during Community Bike Garage. Please come the week before Bike to School Day.

Bike Newport staff will be at Pell at the end of the school day to ride back to the Bike Barn for those that choose to do so.

Thursday, May 7

YOU HAVE THE POWER! E-BIKE CLASS COMBINED SESSION
5:30-7:00 PM, Bike Newport HQ, 62 Broadway, Newport

If you have an e-bike, you’ll be interested in Bike Newport’s free 2-part program: You Have the Power! Registration and an e-bike are required to participate.

In Part 1, you’ll learn how to ride and use e-bike power for your safety and the safety of others. You can choose to do Part 1 on your own, online. If you take Part 1 online, you can register for the second half of the combined session by emailing clare@bikenewportri.org.

Part 2 is in person, and you’ll spend time learning on the bike.

Part 1 and Part 2 classes available in Spanish. Please email gail@bikenewportri.org with any requests.

BIKE TO WORK DAY IN NEWPORT
All activities in front of City Hall 43 Broadway, Newport

Gather your colleagues and bike to work! If you live over the bridges or too far for the commute – drive in and park at the Park & Ride lot – aka Park & Bike Lot 🙂

4:30pm – Bike Friendly Community updates and Bike Friendly Business of the Year Award
5:00pm – Group ride along the new path to Newport Craft Brewery

Friday, May 15

Bike repair workshop at Bike Newport, community bike shop with bicycle maintenance and repair classes, friendly staff, and cycling safety education.

GEM NIGHT
Third Friday of every month, 5:00-7:00 PM
Bike Newport HQ, 62 Broadway, Newport

Bike Newport offers GEM (Gender Equity Mechanics) Night, a time where women, trans folks, and non-binary people get their hands dirty and work on some bikes. 

GEM Night is a supportive atmosphere for sharing, learning, practicing, and relaxing. Drop in, pick up some tools and enjoy a mocktail with us.  For more information contact gail@bikenewportri.org.
